The Popularity of Pinot

I am often asked what my favorite wine is. The only honest answer I can give to this is that I don't have a favorite. I have met many wines in my day and with some it's love at first sip while with others it takes a while to get to know and fully appreciate them for who they are. I have been noticing as of late how easily people become psychotically obsessed with one varietal to the point that they refuse to try anything else. It gets to the point that when forced to try something new they have themselves worked into such a tizzy that even if they like it they still hate it. One of my favorites is when someone states, with such certainty, that they either love or hate something as vast as say Spanish wine or red wine. This amuses me not because it is such an insane generalization but because something like wine can be so astoundingly different based on a vast array of variables. For example, a Pinot Noir made in California might taste like crap to someone and if they form the opinion that they now hate Pinot Noir based on that one taste, they might never try that gorgeous French Burgundy that was right around the corner and could have changed their life forever. I believe that the best possible way to approach wine and food is with an open mind and a willingness to take chances, try new things and to embrace the amazing experiences that they may bring with them. Am I right or am I right!
